Goblin Soldiers are a fictional warrior race in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit. These grotesque creatures serve as the footsoldiers of the Goblin armies dwelling deep within the Misty Mountains.
They are depicted as cruel, brutish, and generally smaller and weaker than Orcs, a related but more powerful race. Their appearance is repulsive, with flat noses, sallow skin, and sharp teeth. Goblin Soldiers are easily frightened but are also inherently malicious.
The primary role of Goblin Soldiers within the story is to act as adversaries for Bilbo Baggins and the thirteen Dwarves. They are encountered primarily in Goblin-town, a vast underground labyrinth ruled by the Great Goblin. They attempt to capture and kill the Dwarves, motivated by greed and hatred.
While not individually significant characters, Goblin Soldiers represent the dangers and evil that lurk beneath the surface of Middle-earth. They are a faceless horde, driven by wickedness and a desire for violence, and are ultimately defeated during the Battle of Five Armies.
